What is Learning Theory?
Learning theory is the thought that learning is a combination of cognitive, emotional and environmental factors that make up ones style. The "style" of learning can be broken up into a combination of different learning styles and include behaviourism, cognitivism and constructivism.
Why do we need a learning theory?
The advantage to having learning theories is that there is already a foundation available that shows the most effective ways that students learn. With learning theories already established teachers just have to chose the theory that best suits their students' ability to learn.

Good...and remember too, learning theories can be chosen by the teacher as the 'one they feel most comfortable with'...knowing your own learning theory preferences goes a long way to understanding why you might be appealing to some students and not to others who learn differently...this leads us nicely into the next section of the course which is learning styles and multiple intelligences! ;-) Understanding we all learn differently helps the teacher realise there is more than one way to teach...and using multiple methods in the classroom to access more student learning, allows the teacher to affect more students then he or she would using one method...;-) Cheers, Diane
