Chapter 1 tries to define educational technology by introducing the four perspectives that shaped educational technology. It is hard to define educational technology due to the many different views on the role of technology.
This chapter also gives the history of educational technology from the pre-microcomputer era to the internet era. Knowing the history of educational technology allows us to learn from the past and develop more effective ways to integrate technology into the classroom.
They also focus a lot on the rationale for using educational technology, such as increased motivation and productivity and developing skills for the information age, and the big issues facing educational technology including economic and safety issues.
Overall the chapter gives a good foundation for understanding the role of educational technology, how it has been implemented in the past, and how we can make it better in the future
